By creating a virtual, 3D sound-field all around the earphone listener, incoming calls can be processed and introduced into this “virtual audio world”. Perhaps at first the incoming ring-tone is heard in 3D space nearby, as if from a real, invisible telephone, then any music sources that are playing are faded down.

If the call is accepted, the listener hears the callers voice as if they were actually present, close by, rather than hearing a disembodied voice in one ear.
